Transforming Dull Skies: Landscape Photography Techniques

Do you over-rely on golden hour for beautiful landscapes? But what happens when you don't get the light and instead there are boring thick clouds? In this video, I'll show you some simple yet effective techniques to transform those boring skies into interesting and beautiful photos. From adjusting exposure and contrast to using filters, I'll cover everything you need to know to stay creative when you have dull skies. This video and the photos in it were all taken around Loch Lomond in Scotland.

Are you the reason your camera misses bird in flight shots?

I'm going to share with you the techniques you need to ensure you keep a bird in the frame whilst tracking it in flight - which will give your camera a much better chance of focusing on it. I cover the three situation where I'm regularly making photos of birds in flight: handheld, lying down and using a gimbal head.

Navigating the ethics of photo editing

In this video I answer a series of questions from a viewer on the ethics of photo editing in nature photography. I've combined these questions with other ethical editing questions that I also receive. We all have to navigate ethics through our photos and editing of them and I will explain my thinking on this topic as well as share a little bit of the history of photo editing.

Making the photo: the difference between photographers and enthusiasts

In this video I'll cover the difference between making a photo and taking a photo and I'll show you how I approach making my photos.

Ulanzi Zero Y tripod review: Ultra lightweight tripod

Wildlife photography hacks

I'm going to share with you my hacks for wildlife photography. These are all things that will make your life as a photographer that little bit easier.

Two steps to better photo editing

I've been asked for my end to end photo editing process. I don't follow a set process, but I do have two really important steps that lead to consistent photos and better results.

Is it worth photographing common species?

In this video I explore the reasons why you should photograph common species whilst I was at Bushy Park in London.

Where to focus in landscape photography

In this video I answer a viewer's email about where to focus in landscape photography. What is focusing a third into the scene? What is hyperfocal distance? And do either of these matter? Is there a better way to focus?

Create wildlife action sequence composite photos

In this video I'll show you how I create wildlife action sequence composite photos - a great way to show the movement of your subject. We'll start with what we do in-camera and move on to how to edit these photos.
